Leggings Are Back: 6 Ways to Wear Them This Fall Without Looking Like You Just Left the Gym

Leggings always come with the same styling challenge: they are comfortable, practical and perfect for everyday wear, but choose the wrong top or shoes and the whole outfit can suddenly look like gym wear.

For Fall 2026, leggings are very much back in fashion. But this time, they are not being worn only with sneakers and hoodies. We are seeing them styled with blazers, coats, shirts, ballet flats, loafers and elegant shoes.

So the real question is no longer whether you can wear leggings, but how to style them so they look modern and polished.

Is there an age limit for wearing leggings?

Not really.
You can wear leggings at 25, 45 or over 60. Age matters much less than the style of the leggings and the overall outfit.
Thin, shiny leggings paired with a cropped hoodie and running shoes will look sporty at any age.
On the other hand, thick matte leggings worn with a coat, blazer, cashmere sweater or loafers create a completely different impression.
Instead of focusing on your age, think about whether the outfit suits your personal style, lifestyle and the occasion.

What about body shape?

There is no strict rule saying that a certain body shape can or cannot wear leggings.

The main thing to remember is that leggings closely follow the shape of the legs and hips, so this area naturally becomes more noticeable.

If you love your legs and want to highlight them, pair leggings with cropped jackets, sweaters or blazers.

If you prefer not to draw too much attention to the hip area, choose longer shirts, oversized blazers, trench coats or long coats.

Fabric is important too. For city outfits, thick matte leggings usually work better than thin, shiny sports styles. They look more polished and can almost act as an alternative to skinny trousers.

Here are 8 stylish ways to wear leggings this fall.

1. With a long coat

One of the easiest ways to make leggings look more elegant is to pair them with classic outerwear.

Wear black leggings with a turtleneck or lightweight sweater and a long, straight-cut coat.

Swap sneakers for ballet flats or loafers and the whole outfit immediately feels less sporty.

A monochrome look works particularly well: black leggings and a black top with a grey, beige, camel or dark brown coat.

Outfit formula: leggings + turtleneck + long coat + ballet flats or loafers.

2. With an oversized blazer

A white T-shirt and leggings on their own may look a little too basic.

Add an oversized menswear-inspired blazer and the outfit immediately feels more intentional.

The blazer brings structure and transforms the combination into a relaxed city look.

Instead of a sports bag, choose a structured handbag, and replace sneakers with ballet flats or loafers.

Outfit formula: T-shirt + leggings + oversized blazer + elegant flat shoes.

3. With a leather jacket

A leather jacket is another easy way to take leggings out of the sportswear category.

Wear a simple T-shirt or sweater with black leggings and an oversized leather jacket.

Add a large soft leather bag to make the look feel even more current.

The result is a relaxed city outfit that works for walking around town, meeting friends or running everyday errands.

Outfit formula: leggings + T-shirt + leather jacket + oversized bag.

4. Stirrup leggings

One of the most noticeable versions of leggings this season is the stirrup style.

Stirrup leggings have a strap that runs underneath the foot.

This creates a longer visual line through the leg and makes them feel more fashion-forward than classic sports leggings.

They work particularly well with pointed shoes, ballet flats, slingbacks and heels.

Add a blazer or coat on top to create a more polished outfit.

Outfit formula: stirrup leggings + blazer + top + elegant shoes.

5. With a barn jacket

A barn jacket is an especially useful piece for fall.

Its relaxed, slightly utilitarian shape creates a nice contrast with fitted leggings.

Wear it over a grey knit or sweater and complete the outfit with ballet flats or loafers.

The result feels casual and comfortable without looking like sportswear.

Outfit formula: barn jacket + sweater + leggings + ballet flats.

6. With a shirt or rugby top

If a blazer feels too formal, try a more relaxed preppy-inspired look.

A long menswear-style shirt, striped polo or rugby shirt works perfectly.

Pair it with simple black leggings and add Mary Janes, loafers or ballet flats.

The result is a comfortable but polished everyday outfit.

Outfit formula: shirt or rugby top + leggings + loafers or ballet flats.

How to keep leggings from looking too sporty

There is one very simple rule.

If you are already wearing leggings, try removing at least two other sportswear elements from the outfit.

For example:

  • replace a hoodie with a blazer or knit;
  • replace sneakers with loafers or ballet flats;
  • replace a sports jacket with a coat;
  • replace a backpack with a leather handbag.

Often, these small changes are enough to make a leggings outfit look much more modern, polished and intentional.
