The Pantone Color Institute has announced the Color of the Year for 2023: Pantone 18-1750 Viva Magenta Carmine Red.
This year’s color choice reflects the “rebellious” zeitgeist and renewed interest in creative experimentation in the after the coronavirus pandemic.
“We chose this color because we felt it was an unconventional shade for an unconventional time. Viva Magenta conveys power – but assertively, not aggressively – we call it a fist in a velvet glove. It’s a color that really vibrates with energy, shows a new signal of strength, and that’s what we all need for a more optimistic future,” says Leatrice Eiseman, director of the Pantone Color Institute.
“Pantone 18-1750 Viva Magenta” comes from the family of red shades and is inspired by the red color of cochineal (a species of insect from which the substance for red carmine dye). It is one of the most valuable natural dyes.
The main shade is chosen not randomly.
Pantone Color Institute takes into account current events in the world of art, cinema and sports, designer collections, political and economic agendas. Even new cartoons, sensational stories and popular sites can affect the statistics.
The Pantone Color Institute annually chooses the main color of the next year. The decision has a strong impact on the fashion industry: even famous brands listen to Pantone and try to include the most trendy color of the year in their collections.
The shade of the year will appear:
- in the collections of fashion houses;
- interior design projects;
- production of decorative cosmetics;
- make-up and manicure trends;
- printing and advertising.
